Epidemiology Of Cleft Lip And Palate |
The lip and cleft palate affects 1 in 1,000 Caucasians. The incidence varies with ethnicity, because Asians are affected 1 in 500 while African Americans are affected 1 in 2,000. For parents without condition who have a child with cleft lip and cleft palate, the probability of having a second affected child is 2.7% if the first child has a unilateral cleft (one-sided) and 5.4% if the first child has a bilateral cleft (on both sides). For parents without condition with two children with cleft lip and cleft palate, the risk of a subsequent pregnancy resulting with condition is 10%. In the case of a parent with condition of cleft lip and palate already have an affected child, the risk of having another trouble lip and cleft palate is 14%. |
Hand Surgery
HAND SURGERY |
The trigger finger or tenosynovitis is the inflammation of the tendon. Initially it can cause pain and can feel a nodule or lump in the palm . |
The flexor tendons are the terminal extension of the forearm muscles . Tendons enter the hand using the wrist and insert into the finger bones to produce flexion or bending . Tendons glide smoothly in narrow tunnels called sheaves. Over time the tendons can develop a discrete nodule or swelling. The smooth sliding tendon is interrupted when passing through the narrower portions of the tunnel. The narrow portions correspond to the pulleys. Patients may describe a finger trapment associated with pain. Over time, trapping can become so severe that the use of the other hand is needed to release the trapped finger. |
CARPAL TUNNEL

The carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition that can occur when the median nerve, the most sensitive supplier of the hand and fingers, is compressed in the carpal tunnel. |
The carpal tunnel consists of eight carpal bones and the transverse carpal ligament. This tunnel acts as a passage through which the median nerve pass nine tendons from the wrist to reach the hand. Median nerve compression occurs by a decrease in space inside the tunnel, it can be caused by conditions such as tissue swelling, fluid retention, presence of a cyst, an abnormal structure or other conditions. Among the symptoms you can feel your hand numb. Usually the index finger and the middle are the most affected, but the feeling can occur throughout the hand. If your symptoms are just beginning, you can wake up at night feeling numbness or pain, which improves when you shake your hand. |

Quervain ‘s disease is an inflammation of the tendons that travel in the radial side of the wrist. |
Pain is the major symptom of Quervain tendonitis and may be associated with specific movements or actions performed by the hand. Activities that require a grip or a fair grip can cause exquisite pain . Opening a door or a jar, starting a car with the key can cause pain. The swelling on the thumb side of the wrist can be seen and even some cysts may also feel or notice. |
SYNOVIAL CYST |
Synovial cyst is a cystic mass from a synovial structure that is closely related to the joints of the wrist and hand, but can also appear in other joints and tendon sheaths of the body. |
It is noteworthy that cysts on the back of the wrist come from the scapholunate joint and cysts and radial palmar surface of the wrist originate in the scapholunate-trapezial joint. This could suggest that the scaphoid subjected to shear stress to the ligaments, in some activities of the wrist.
